Cape Cod, Massachusetts – Fern Engineering Inc., a worldwide engineering company that provides expert consulting services and products to the turbomachinery industry, was selected by Siemens Nederland N.V. to provide mechanical and control systems training. Two weeks of training will be conducted at each of three sites in Turkey. The week-long mechanical training will include a detailed review of all gas turbine-related equipment including the internal design and auxiliaries. The second week will focus on the Mark V control and protection system.

The training will take place in the Turkish cities of Canakkale, Adana, and Mersin at the new plants built by Siemens for Enerjisa Enerji Uretim A.S., a subsidiary of the Sabanci Group. The training from Fern Engineering will provide the operators with extensive knowledge of the General Electric Frame 6B gas turbines that are featured at these plants. In addition, Fern will provide a one-week training session on the generator and the electrical systems of the gas turbine at the Adana site.

According to Fern Engineering's vice president and project manager Jeff Phillips, "The most important service we can provide in our training is to show the operators how to operate their facility in a safe manner." He added, "As gas turbine consultants, we've investigated so many failures that we know what can, and often does, go wrong. If we can show the Enerjisa staff how to avoid the mistakes of others, I think we will have done our job."

Fern Engineering has recently completed the training at the Canakkale site. The goals of the training were to give the Enerjisa operators a thorough understanding of the gas turbine's design and how it works, in order to convey the importance of monitoring certain parameters on a daily basis. To assure the goal was met, Fern sent Dwight DeNise, the company's primary instructor, to train the operators. DeNise has more than 35 years of gas turbine experience including participation in the construction and start up of gas turbine plants throughout the world. "Enerjisa's operators were well educated and highly motivated. They kept me on my toes with their questions," said DeNise.

Training at the Mersin and Adana sites will be completed in the first quarter of 2003.
