Cape Cod, Massachusetts – Fern Engineering Inc., a worldwide engineering company that provides expert consulting services and products to the turbomachinery industry, has partnered with Wood Group Power Solutions to convert an existing GE LM6000PC package at the 110MW EnCana Cavalier Power Station near Calgary, Alberta, to enable testing of overhauled LM6000PA and PC engines.
This unique conversion project will provide TransCanada Turbines Ltd. (TCT) the opportunity to use a portion of the plant as a "test cell" in order to minimize the cost of building and operating such a facility.
Using one turbine generator package as a test cell will require disconnecting and removing EnCana's engine from the package, installing and connecting the test engine, running the test engine, disconnecting and removing the test engine, and reinstalling and reconnecting the EnCana engine all within a short time span.
In order to accomplish these tasks in the time allotted, both engines must have quick-disconnect connections for all the connections except for the gas supply, which will have the standard ANSI bolting flange.
"Modifying an existing generator package is a unique approach for testing overhauled turbines", said Hector Bourgeois, president of Fern Engineering.
"By using the plant during weekends, TransCanada will be able to test LM6000s at full load in the most cost-effective method."
"TransCanada Turbines will have the only test facility in the world able to test LM6000 engines against the live power grid which will give our customers a better understanding of how their engine will operate in the field", said Pete Watson, president of TransCanada Turbines.
"This project would not have been possible without the cooperation of EnCana and the engineering resources of Fern Engineering and the Wood Group."
Wood Group Power Solutions, based in Tulsa, OK, is the lead contractor on the project and is responsible for both mechanical and control system modifications that will be carried out at the EnCana facility.
Fern Engineering, working as a sub-contractor, is responsible for the design of all of the mechanical modifications within the existing LM6000 package and has also built two engine skids or cradles which will allow for rapid removal and reinstallation.
Work on the LM6000 conversion began in January and modifications will be completed this fall.
Dale Goehring, TCT's senior project engineer for the EnCana modification, will be presenting a paper at the 15th Symposium on Industrial Applications of Gas Turbines in Alberta this October.
The paper will provide a detailed description of the required modifications and will outline the benefits of the project for both TCT and its customers.
